Protest under COVID-19, 27 November Update

Extinction Rebellion Scotland protest, Grangemouth, October 2020.

New travel restrictions were announced on 20 November 2020. This is a major change to the Coronavirus regulations which give the police powers to fine people for crossing local authority boundaries or the Scottish border.

Exemptions are varied though, covering basic activities like essential shopping, visiting vulnerable people, or going about your work. These are listed fully on our new guidance and well worth learning so we can challenge police abuse if it happens.

Other regulations relevant to activism and protest are unchanged from the situation in October, including exemptions which should allow static protests in levels 0-3.

However with much of the West of Scotland now in level 4, protests larger than six people appear to be effectively banned in those places. SCALP would welcome any reports of how this is being implemented by police and local authorities.
